Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Paramedic Transport Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) on the NICU transport team you will provide comprehensive patient care in conjunction with patient care team members during inter-hospital transport to include the respiratory assessment and stabilization of transport patients and delineated diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care interventions. You will be knowledgeable on the logistics of air medical transports, specific aircrafts utilized by the vendors, emergency procedures, System and community communication standards, safety policies and procedures and hazard recognition. You will function as a paramedic providing care during transport to/from facilities to include medication administration, intravenous fluid administration, and necessary support care.

What you will do in the role:

  • Utilizes in-depth clinical assessment skills. Performing comprehensive patient assessments to determine predictable and potential needs of patients in complex situations.
  • Applies the clinical assessment to formulate the plan of care, when possible, in collaboration with the patient, significant others, and health care team members. Adjust the plan of care according to the continual assessment and evaluation of the patient. Anticipates impending crisis and initiates early intervention to decrease risk of problems and/or complications.
  • Responsible for cardiopulmonary care on transported patients to include any necessary diagnostic and therapeutic cardiopulmonary procedures. During transport provides critical care to the patient in the absence of physician in collaboration with transport team members and referral facility staff. This includes assessment, interpretation of lab data, and initiation of interventions as per protocol and contacting medical control for online orders.
  • Evaluates and modifies the plan of care in conjunction with the transport RN based on observable responses to interventions and patient outcomes.
  • Maintains competence in performing advanced skills specific to care of the critically ill/injured patient in the transport environment. Transport procedures include: administration of medications establishing IV access peripherally, intraosseous, venipuncture, arterial puncture, tracheal intubation, needle thoracostomy, interpretation of blood gases and lab values, maintain, monitor, and evaluate non-invasive diagnostic equipment, determine need for respiratory assistance and oxygen requirements and perform and/or assist in CPR and other emergent procedures.
  • Maintains knowledge and demonstrates professional practice within the allowable scope(s) of practice both inside the facility and during transport in accordance with the Texas Administrative Code Title 25 Chapter 157, hospital policies and applicable regulations. Appropriately continues necessary advanced treatment modalities (to include, but not limited to, IVs, intubation, and drug therapy) initiated during transport on the critically ill/injured patient until care of the patient can be transferred to a qualified individual within the facility.

What you will need for the role:

  • Associates degree in Respiratory Therapy from an American Medical Association accredited program
  • Completion of an approved EMT-Paramedic program (approved by Texas Department of Health and Human Services – DSHS).
  • Two (2) years of direct care respiratory care practitioner experience in a specialized critical care area (NICU, PICU, Emergency Department (ED)).
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist credential by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
  • Current Texas Respiratory Care Practitioner license
  • EMT-Paramedic Certification through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT)
  • Current certification as Basic Life Support (BLS) provider
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
