Job Summary and Qualifications
As a Pharmacy Buyer you will be responsible for managing the pharmaceutical inventory in the assigned hospital including purchasing of pharmaceuticals and related products, oversee receipt and placing these items in stock, optimization of pharmacy inventory both in the facility pharmacy and automated cabinets. You will ensure all pharmaceutical products are appropriately labeled with barcodes including repackaging of products for patient administration. You will work with the director and clinical team to ensure formulary compliance and maintains contract compliance. You will assist the automation coordinator or individual in similar role with respect to Automated Dispensing Cabinet (ADU) inventory management including the maintenance of controlled substance inventory and handling the request for an addition of new items to the pharmacy inventory. You will also assist in training personnel on inventory handling and overseeing workflow in the pharmacy when the tech supervisor or pharmacy manager is unavailable.
What you will do in this position:
- As a Pharmacy Buyer under the supervision of Director of Pharmacy, you will participate in all activities of the pharmacy department that involve the inventory management of drugs, medication storage areas and department related supplies. You will function in accordance with standard written policy & procedures, guidelines, and state and federal regulations.
- You will establish and maintain appropriate inventory levels of drugs/supplies. You will make decisions in purchasing while complying with budget limitations, and achieve a maximum inventory turnover rate.
- You will communicate in real time shortages of medication or change in medication stock availability.
- You will assist Pharmacy Director and Clinical Manager on all product substitutions when backorders occur during the normal procurement process.
- You will oversee receiving, storage, and return of medications to the Pharmacy wholesaler or Consolidated Distribution Center (CDC) if applicable.
- You will maintain invoicing for all drug and supply accounts.
- You will process wholesaler invoices for payment by accounts payable according to Policy and Procedures.
- You will provide training, technical support and/or in-service education to pharmacy staff regarding pharmacy inventory management products/systems.
- You will coordinate and document disposal of all expired medications.
- You will monitor trends in utilization of reverse distributors to minimize wastage.
- You will assist with maintenance of database and/or paperwork on medication recalls.
- You will prepare Pharmacy Department for annual inventory updating shelf labels, inventory supply forms, and databases as needed.

What qualifications you will need:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Accounting or Supply Chain Logistic, preferred
- 2 years of hospital pharmacy buyer experience or equivalent combination of education and/or experience, preferred
- National Certification (CPhT)
- Current Registered Pharmacy Technician by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy
- Purchasing Manager Certificate – American Purchasing Society, preferred
