Seeking a Sonographer Maternal Fetal Medicine FE who is a diagnostic ultrasound professional who is qualified to perform independent sonographic assessments of maternal-fetal conditions. A person in this role must be qualified by academic and clinical experience, along with professional credentialing which should include the Fetal Echocardiography registry, OB/GYN registry. Their responsibility is to provide diagnostic patient care services for routine and high-risk obstetrical cases using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. A MFM sonographer must have advanced knowledge in various fetal conditions and anomalies as well as knowledge of contributing high-risk maternal factors. In addition, the scope of practice of the diagnostic MFM sonographer includes those procedures, acts, and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience. This person must demonstrate competency and must hold the appropriate ARDMS certification(s), which is the standard of practice in ultrasound.


What you will do in this role:


1. Demonstrates expertise in providing patient care by confirming correct patient identification and that the requested procedure correlates with the patient’s clinical history.

2. Uses interviewing techniques to gather relevant information from the patient or patient’s representative along with the medical records to accurately reveal the health status and medical history of the patient.

3. Assesses the patient’s ability to tolerate procedures and demonstrates a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and positioning. Positions the patient in a proficient and caring manner to obtain the desired results as specified by diagnosis.

4. Communicates with the patient in a manner appropriate to the patient’s ability to understand. Presents explanations and instructions in a manner easily understood by the patient and other health care providers; responds appropriately to patient’s questions and concerns and modifies exams as necessary.

5. Refers specific diagnostic, treatment, or prognosis questions to the patient’s physician.

6. Implements a procedure plan that falls within established protocols.

7. Initiates first aid in emergent situations, as required by practice policy. Notifies an appropriate health provider when immediate medical attention is necessary.

8. Recognizes sonographic characteristics of normal and abnormal function, tissue, structure, and blood flow. Adjusts scanning technique to optimize image quality and spectral waveform characteristics. Analyzes sonographic findings throughout the course of the examination so that a comprehensive exam is completed and sufficient data is provided to the physician; performs measurements and calculations according to practice protocol; strives to minimize patient exposure to acoustic energy without compromising examination quality and/or completeness.

9. Establishes that the examination, as performed, complies with applicable protocols and guidelines.

10. Able to proficiently perform essential maternal-fetal ultrasound examinations, such as; detailed anatomical evaluation, complete fetal echocardiogram, growth assessment, fetal wellbeing (to include biophysical profiles, maternal/fetal Doppler, amniotic fluid assessments), needle procedure guidance, examinations of maternal pelvic anatomy (including transvaginal cervical assessment) and advanced diagnostic 3D/4D techniques.

11. Documents all required views and correctly categorize as “normal”, “abnormal”, or “suboptimal/non-diagnostic”

12. Develops differential diagnoses based on preliminary ultrasound findings.

13. Uses preliminary ultrasound findings and potential diagnoses to appropriately extend or alter the sonogram to further refine the results

14. Documents clearly, concisely, and completely. Records diagnostic and patient data in the appropriate record, according to established policy and procedure.

15. Records diagnostic images and data for use by the interpreting provider.

16. Initiates additional scanning techniques as indicated by the examination and uses professional judgment to adapt to the procedure plan for optimal results.

17. Evaluates the patient's physical and mental status prior to discharge from the ultrasound room.

18. Upon assessment of the examination findings, recognizes the need for an urgent rather than routine report and takes appropriate action.

19. Adheres to established policy and procedural guidelines and to the accepted professional ethical standards.

20. Works in partnership with the physician and other staff to provide the best care possible for all patients, maintaining an attitude of service and excellence.

21. Maintains knowledge in own field of expertise; participates in continuing education activities through professional societies and organizations to enhance knowledge, skills, and performance; shares knowledge with colleagues, students, and all members of the health care team.

22. Is accountable for professional judgments and decisions.

23. Functions within the legal and ethical boundaries established by the industry's professional standards; the American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine (AIUM) standards and within the scope of state and federal licensure regulations.

24. Utilizes clinical knowledge, technical expertise, and critical thinking skills to safely perform tests and procedures according to approved protocols, guidelines, policies, and procedures.

25. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of relevant properties of fluid dynamics and physics in ultrasound.

26. Well versed on medical practices, use of medical terminology, and obstetric conditions.

27. Demonstrates effective and efficient use of the GE Viewpoint medical reporting system.

28. Demonstrates effective and efficient use of the ultrasound machine.

29. Demonstrates effective use of policies and procedures.

30. Demonstrates effective problem solving and decision making skills; demonstrates effective organizational and critical thinking skills.

31. Demonstrates effective time management skills, including priority setting.

32. Demonstrates effective customer service skills.

33. Utilizes effective team-building skills. Collaboratively and effectively interacts with other members of the multidisciplinary team.

34. Demonstrates effective communication and interpersonal skills for appropriate handling of stressful or difficult situations.

Minimum Education, Experience, Training, Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities and Other Job-Related Characteristics:

1. Education:

 Graduate of an educational program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography or minimum one-year obstetrics (OB) experience.

 A single two-year allied health education program that is patient-care related (Allied health occupations include, but are not limited to, diagnostic medical sonographer OR Graduate of a program accredited by an agency recognized by the Council for Higher

Education Accreditation (CHEA), United States Department of Education (USDOE) or Canadian Medical Association (CMA), that specifically conducts programmatic accreditation for diagnostic medical sonography/diagnostic cardiac sonography/vascular technology. (Currently (as of 12/2013) the only organizations that offer programmatic accreditation under the aforementioned associations are the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the Canadian Medical Association (CMA)); Minimum one year experience as a diagnostic medical sonographer.

2. Preferred:

 Associates Degree or higher in related technological field.

1. Experience:

 At least two (2) years previous of verifiable experience as an MFM Sonographer

Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility and department/unit which are specific to the needs of the patient population served (if applicable).


Minimum License, Certificates, or Registrations Required:

1. Required:

 Credentials with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)  Current certification with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) registered in OB

 Current Registry in Fetal Echocardiography (FE) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).

 At least two (2) years previous of verifiable experience as an MFM Sonographer  BLS certification as per MHS policy
